What Does Safeguarding Children Mean

What Does Safeguarding Children Mean?

Wondering what does safeguarding children mean in the UK? This guide explains the full meaning, legal duties, key principles, and who is responsible for keeping children safe.

Table of Contents

Safeguarding is a promise society makes to all children, to ensure that everyone grows up free from harm, safe, and loved. There is a question that will be asked by the majority of people working with children in the UK at some time in their careers: what does safeguarding children mean? It’s a serious matter to entertain. Protecting children is not a legal obligation to be fulfilled. It is an active, ongoing commitment to safeguard children from abuse, neglect and harm. It’s about providing safe spaces, establishing trust and ensuring all children are allowed to flourish.

Safeguarding children in the UK is underpinned by a robust legislative framework, a system of agencies, and national guidelines. No matter your role, within a school, care home, healthcare environment or voluntary setting, knowledge of safeguarding is key. This influences your approach to children, your reactions to concerns and your collaboration with families and other professionals to support wellbeing.

In this guide, you will learn everything about it. This blog covers the legal definition, principles, who to report to, and who is responsible for a concern. At the conclusion of the course, you will be well informed about safeguarding children within the UK’s legal and practice context.

What Does Safeguarding Children Mean?

In its simplest terms, what does safeguarding children mean is a question of protection, prevention and promotion of welfare. Safeguarding children involves taking all reasonable measures to make sure that children are protected from harm, abuse and neglect. It also involves children being reared in conditions which enable them to achieve their full potential. This definition extends beyond the mere Reacting to Abuse. It encompasses secure environments, awareness-raising, and a culture of openness to raise concerns and act on them.

In the UK, there is a statutory definition of safeguarding children, set out in the Children Acts of 1989 and 2004. These laws put into law a clear responsibility on local authorities, schools, NHS organisations and other agencies to protect and promote the welfare of children. How this duty is to be carried out is detailed in the statutory guidance Working Together to Safeguard Children, which was updated in 2023. It clarifies that safeguarding is the responsibility of all involved, not just of social workers or specialist services.

Safeguarding is not the same as child protection, although they are part of it. Child protection is the specific response to a child’s disclosure when the child is identified as at risk of significant harm. Safeguarding is the umbrella term for child protection, general welfare promotion, safer recruitment, online safety and staff training. These all combine to create a whole child strategy for child safety.

Having this understanding is important because it means that safeguarding in the UK is for all children, irrespective of background, nationality, disability, or family situation. It can be used in schools, early years settings, sports clubs, faith organisations, healthcare settings and in any setting where children are found. Safeguarding should not be a tick-box exercise. Actively and positively ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children is a duty we need to perform to the very best of our ability.

The Legal Framework Behind Safeguarding Children in the UK

A comprehensive and robust legal framework underpins child protection in the UK. This framework assists practitioners and organisations in understanding what is expected of them and why these expectations exist. The law isn’t only meant to establish minimum standards. It is a reflection of the values of a society that believes every child should be safe and thrive.

1. The Children Act 1989

The Children Act 1989 is the key piece of legislation governing child welfare in England. It ushered in the concept of placing the child’s welfare at the top of all considerations. It also introduced the idea of children ‘in need’ and defined the responsibility of local authorities to help children and families where support is needed. The Act brought a clear framework of powers for courts and social workers to intervene if a child is likely to suffer significant harm. It provided a legal platform for child protection work that remains important today.

2. The Children Act 2004

The Children Act 2004 consolidated that and added multi-agency working. It led to the establishment of Local Safeguarding Children Boards, which Safeguarding Partners subsequently superseded under the Children and Social Work Act 2017. These need to involve inter-agency working between the local authority, clinical commissioning groups and the police to ensure the safety of children. This is a joined-up approach because none of the agencies can keep children safe on their own. Effective safeguarding requires that information be shared and that professionals across a range of sectors coordinate.

3. Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023

Working Together to Safeguard Children is the statutory guidance which outlines the duties of organisations organisationsls to work together to safeguard children. Applies to all organisations in connection or involvement with children in England, such as local authorities, schools, health services, the police and voluntary organisations. It clearly states that child protection processes are not the sole focus of safeguarding. It’s not just about the actual equipment and support available to a child and their family, but about the whole system of support and intervention.

4. Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023

Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) is statutory guidance for all schools and colleges in England. It outlines the legal responsibilities of school staff, governors and proprietors for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The 2023 edition reinforced the involvement of the Designated Safeguarding Lead, guidance on online safety and child-on-child abuse and the responsibilities of all staff across the school to act on any concern they hear.

The Key Principles of Safeguarding Children

The principles of safeguarding children provide a values-based and practical framework for all those working with children. They encourage practitioners and organisations to know how to do things, but also why. The principles are recognised in the UK and underpin both policy, practice, and training in all places where children are present.

This will ensure that the principles of safeguarding are at the core of their practice. It is a way of ensuring that a tick box system is not used and that people are genuinely caring, respectful and responsible. The six core principles of safeguarding are listed below and form the basis of the approach to work in children’s services in the UK, including health visiting. The six core principles of safeguarding are listed below and are the principles used throughout children’s services across the UK, including health visiting.

1. Empowerment

Empowerment is when a child learns how to understand their own safety through knowledge, confidence, and tools. It covers things with kids with regard to their rights, their bodies, and seeking assistance. Child empowerment increases the likelihood that a child will disclose or express concerns. Practitioners who work from an empowerment perspective listen to children, value their opinions and engage them in decisions concerning them. This helps children to develop trust and changes the perception of being listened to. Empowerment is particularly significant for children who have suffered previous trauma or come from marginalised backgrounds.

2. Prevention

The central theme of good practice in safeguarding is prevention. Prevention is not wait-and-see, but an effort to recognise early and take steps before a child becomes seriously harmed. This involves raising awareness with parents, carers and children regarding risks of exploitation, online safety and healthy relationships. But it also reflects organisations’ efforts to recruit in a safer way and to have put in place strong training programmes. Prevention is more effective than responding to harm after the fact and is more affordable. A preventive approach requires professionals to be alert, curious, and proactive in their interactions with children and families.

3. Proportionality

Proportionality refers to the idea that actions taken to safeguard should match the risks posed. Not all concerns will need to be referred to social services immediately. Other times it is best to have a supportive conversation with a family, further monitoring or a referral to an early help service. Proportionate safeguarding does not unnecessarily or unacceptably interfere with a child’s life with their family, while safeguarding children who do need it. It demands professional judgment, good training and knowledge of the distinction between vulnerability and risk. The practitioner needs to consider the balance of risks and benefits of intervening versus not intervening.

4. Protection

The aspect of safeguarding most commonly linked to child protection processes is protection. Involves recognising that the child is at risk of serious harm and taking action to protect the child from such harm. This could include a child protection conference, a child protection plan or, if it is very serious, an application to court. The protection needs a multi-agency approach and coordinated action with individuals working in several organisations. At all times, the child’s well-being and best interests should be the focus. It is not about punishment; rather,r it is about protection, which is supportive, not about enforcing rules and preventing people from becoming safe.

Child Protection

5. Partnership

Protecting children is most effective when it is based on good partnerships. This involves collaborating with families, communities, schools and health and police organisations to create a network of support around each child. Partnership also involves including parents and carers as key partners in the safety of their children, unless this puts the child at risk. Professionals working in isolation result in children falling through the cracks. Communication, respect, and challenging each other are key to an effective partnership. This collaborative approach is supported by the three statutory safeguarding partners, who lead safeguarding partnerships at a local level and provide the infrastructure for it.

6. Accountability

Accountability is defined as organisations being aware of their responsibilities in safeguarding and being held accountable for their actions. All organisations must have a clear safeguarding policy, a clear safeguarding lead and a culture of transparency. Accountability is the basis of learning from mistakes, incorporating serious case reviews and making adjustments to systems accordingly. It also ensures that children and families have ways of making complaints and that professionals are held to high standards of practice. So accountability is a critical component in establishing trust, within organisations and within systems, to keep children safe.

Types of Abuse Covered by Safeguarding Children

Knowing about the child abuse categories is a key component of safeguarding. It is impossible to stop children from being hurt if you don’t know how to recognise being hurt. There are four main types of abuse recognised in the UK as statutory guidance. Physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect are all types of abuse. Can result in lengthy and serious damage to the child’s physical and mental welfare for each type. It is important to remember that sometimes abuse occurs in more than one way. If a child is subjected to one form of abuse, they are likely to be subjected to many more.

Physical Abuse

Physical abuse is an attack on a child’s physical body. It involves beating, shaking, throwing, burning, biting or poisoning a child. It can also involve making up or causing a child to become ill, which is called Fabricated or Induced Illness (FII). Unexplained bruising, burns, fractures, and any other injuries might indicate physical abuse. Children can also become frightened of some adults, don’t want to go home or change their behaviour. Practitioners need to be aware of injuries that cannot be explained or that are not on common parts of a child’s body.

Physical Abuse of a Child

Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse is when a child is being emotionally abused all the time. It can include frightening a child, making a child feel unloved, worthless or exploited. Emotional abuse refers to threatening or embarrassing a child, observing domestic violence and setting unrealistic expectations that may affect a child’s self-esteem. It can also occur when a child is prevented from establishing normal social relations. Emotional abuse can be more difficult to detect than physical abuse, as there are no visible injuries. These can involve age-inappropriate behaviour, developmental delay, anxiety, withdrawn behaviour or low self-esteem.

Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse is when an adult makes a child perform or agree to do sexual acts. Not always involving physical contact, and can involve a child being involved in the creation of sexual content, or a child being made to view sexual images or videos, or being groomed online. Sexual abuse may be carried out by an adult or by other children. Some signs of sexual abuse include inappropriate knowledge or behaviour for the age of a child, physical changes in the genital or anal area, self-damaging behaviour, or changes in behaviour. Practitioners need to recognise grooming, which may be subtle and involve gaining the trust of the child and family over time.

Neglect

Neglect is when someone consistently fails to provide a child with essential physical, emotional, medical, and/or educational needs. It is the most frequently reported child maltreatment in the UK and is the most likely to affect a child’s development and long-term wellbeing. Neglect may be indicated by issues related to hygiene, clothing, food, exhaustion, untreated medical issues, and absences from school. Neglected children may be withdrawn, have few friends, or have attention-seeking behaviours. While caution is needed when determining poverty, there are times when parents or carers are not providing for their child’s needs, which support practitioners should be aware of.

Child Sexual Exploitation

Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) is a type of sexual abuse whereby children are persuaded, manipulated, coerced or deceived into sexual activity in return for gifts, affection, money or status. County lines exploitation, involving exploiting children in the transport of drugs across county lines, is also becoming a serious safeguarding concern throughout the UK. Statutory guidance increasingly identifies both forms of exploitation, and neither can be ignored in any modern safeguarding training.

Who is Responsible for Safeguarding Children in the UK?

Safeguarding children is everyone’s responsibility. It is not just a statement; it is a principle that is firmly part of UK legislation and guidance. All adults, including paid staff, volunteers and members of the public, who have any contact with children have a part to play in keeping them safe. People have different degrees of responsibility, and thus, the responsibility to act on concerns is universal. There are specific, statutory responsibilities for safeguarding that are g carried out by some individuals and organisations. Listed below are the main roles of the safeguarding system in England.

Local Safeguarding Partners

The Children and Social Work Act 2017 sets out three statutory safeguarding partners, which are responsible for the leadership and co-ordination of safeguarding arrangements in each local area. The local authority, the clinical commissioning group (or integrated care board), and the chief of the local police. As partners, they should ensure that local safeguarding arrangements are published, that multi-agency safeguarding reviews are held, and that there is learning and improvement across agencies. They should make sure the systems and processes are effective at keeping children safe in their area, and that they are coordinated and reviewed regularly.

Local Authorities

Local authorities are primarily responsible for child protection and safeguarding in their areas. They undertake child protection investigations as outlined in the Children Act 1989, chair child protection conferences, and determine whether a child should have a child protection plan. Children’s services departments within local authorities have social workers who conduct assessments of children in need and children at risk. They liaise closely with the Police, health services, voluntary organisations and schools to coordinate support and protection for vulnerable children.

Schools and Educational Settings

Under English law, all schools, academies, free schools and early years settings must have a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). The DSL is responsible for effectively managing safeguarding concerns, liaising with children’s services departments and other agencies, and ensuring suitable safeguarding training for staff. Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) is the statutory guidance for schools, and all staff are expected to know the signs and indicators of abuse and neglect and how to report concerns. The role of the school in safeguarding is absolutely crucial, as it is often the first place a child experiencing harm comes into contact with.

Healthcare Professionals

NHS and other healthcare professionals have a critical role in safeguarding children. The first adults that a child may come into contact with who might notice signs of abuse or neglect may include GPs, health visitors, midwives, nurses or hospital doctors. There is a need for named professionals to safeguard children and young people, including Named Nurses and Named Doctors, who offer expert advice and guidance in healthcare settings. Advice on the role of healthcare professionals in safeguarding is provided by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in conjunction with NHS England. Safeguarding procedures are carried out at an appropriate level, and all clinical staff are trained in safeguarding and know how to make referrals to children’s services.

Healthcare Professionals safeguarding children

Police

The police have a key role in child protection, and when a criminal offence against children has occurred. They can immediately remove a child from one of the danger zones by issuing an Emergency Protection Order (EPO). Joint Investigative Interviews are where police and social workers work hand in hand in investigating evidence from children who may have been affected by child abuse. The police also conduct investigations of serious child abuse, child sexual exploitation, trafficking and child criminal exploitation. They coordinate their work in Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hubs (MASH), where professionals from various agencies share information and assess the risk to the individual child.

Voluntary, Community, and Faith Organisations

Safeguarding is a responsibility of voluntary organisations, sports clubs and faith organisations. Organisations and children spend a considerable amount of time in these settings, and adults there have an important role to play in identification and reporting. Whilst all these organisations have clear safeguarding policies, they should also designate a safeguarding lead and have a programme of regular training for volunteers and staff. The Charity Commission expects charities to show due regard for, and attention to, safeguarding, and to report serious incidents to the Charity Commission. Insufficient safeguarding arrangements prompt the regulator to act.

Safer Recruitment: A Key Part of Safeguarding Children

A great way to keep kids safe is to make sure that the right people are working with kids. Safer recruitment is a systematic method of recruiting, vetting and inducting staff and volunteers who work with children. As a central part of safeguarding, all organisations need to employ or engage people to work with children.

Safer recruitment starts before the job advertisement. That consists of writing clear job descriptions, conducting in-depth interviews, checking references and performing Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. For those who work with children, you are required to have enhanced DBS checks. Regulated activity means teaching, caring for, and supervising children, and any unsupervised activity that takes place in a regulated activity setting, such as in a school or children’s care home.

A DBS check is not enough to ensure children’s safety. It simply examines records at a certain moment in time and is not a promise of future behaviour. This is because organisations have some form of safeguarding supervision, a culture where concerns can be raised, and regular training. There also needs to be a good induction programme that ensures the new staff member is aware of the organisation’s procedures and knows how to respond if they have a concern about a child.

If an employee or volunteer is unavailable, or if something goes wrong, the organisation is responsible for referring a DBS. This encompasses cases such as, but not limited to, termination of employment or removal from a position due to concerns about harm children may be exposed to. Where an organisation or person is at risk of harm but leaves before the disciplinary process is complete, referrals are also required. Non-referral in cases of necessary referral is an offence. Safer recruitment is not only about keeping the bad guys out, but it’s also about creating a culture of accountability and transparency that keeps children safe.

How to Report a Safeguarding Concern About a Child?

Understanding what to do when there is concern about a child is also one of the most important areas of safeguarding knowledge. Often, people find themselves worrying about getting it wrong, about not gaining a family’s trust or about what might happen to the child if they make a disclosure. While it is normal to have such concerns, it is important to note that all professionals working with children have a responsibility to address them. Failing to report is not a neutral option and can have devastating effects for a child.

Your organisation’s policy and your Designated Safeguarding Lead are the first steps to take when reporting a concern. Whenever you have concerns about a child, you should report them to your DSL without delay. There’s no need for evidence of abuse to raise a concern. Safeguarding should be a process of sharing information, not diagnosis. Your DSL will review the information you have given and determine what additional action to take,e including making a referral to children’s services.

In an emergency where a child is thought to be at immediate risk, call 999. A referral can be made directly to the local authority children’s services if you can’t contact the DSL or feel that your DSL has not taken appropriate action. You can also get advice and support from the NSPCC helpline (0808 800 5000). In every instance, it is best to record your concerns with precision and in a factual manner: what you observe, hear, or are told. This record will be most important if a formal investigation is conducted.

It is important to be aware of information sharing in safeguarding. Sharing information about children does not breach the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or the Data Protection Act 2018 when there is a risk of harm. Safeguarding principles hold that it is the duty to protect a child, which may supersede normal considerations of confidentiality. When professionals have concerns about data protection,n they should never be deterred from disclosing information that may help keep a child safe.

Safeguarding Training for Those Working With Children in UK

Training is one of the most effective ways to integrate safeguarding into practice. Children are safer when staff and volunteers understand what safeguarding entails, how to identify abuse, and what to do if they have a concern. Safeguarding training isn’t just about knowledge; it’s about confidence, a challenge to assumptions, and a culture of vigilance and care.

Different levels of safeguarding training are required for various roles and types of work with children in the UK. Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) is statutory guidance for schools that sets out minimum training requirements for school staff. Care Certificate modules cover safeguarding and child protection, and the Care Certificate is the benchmark for entry-level care workers. It is expected that all organisations will ensure that their staff are trained to a suitable level and that training is updated regularly.

Safeguarding training usually includes the law on safeguarding, understanding the types of abuse and neglect, identifying signs and indicators of abuse or neglect, responding to a disclosure from a child, and making a referral to children’s services. Designated Safeguarding Leads and anyone in a leadership role relating to safeguarding will need more advanced training, including Safeguarding Children. This training includes multi-agency working, child protection processes and dealing with complex cases.

Online safeguarding courses provide an adaptable and hassle-free alternative for professionals to obtain training. They provide an opportunity for people to learn at their own level and pace and to fit training into their work schedule. However, it is crucial that online training also includes opportunities for ongoing face-to-face discussions, supervision, and practice applying learning to real-life examples. Safeguarding must not be a one-off activity. All those who work with children must have ongoing training and development in this area.

Online Safety and Safeguarding Children in the Digital Age

The digital world poses new and emerging risks to children. Online safety has now become an integral part of safeguarding and needs to be taken seriously by organisations working with children. UK children’s lives are characterised by spending time online, with social media, games, videos and messaging apps being some of their favourite online destinations. The internet can be a huge educational and socialising tool. Still, it can also be dangerous for children as they can be groomed, cyberbullied, exposed to harmful materials and online sexual exploitation.

Grooming can occur entirely online. Offenders exploit social media, messaging apps and gaming sites to develop a relationship with young people, slowly secure their trust and then exploit or abuse them. Children may not realise that they are being groomed and feel guilty if sexual material has been shared. For this reason, teaching information about online safety needs to be an ongoing and age-appropriate component to every child’s home and in-school experience.

The Online Safety Act 2023 places a legal obligation on platforms with user-generated content to keep children safe. This means that age-verification systems will be in place, illegal content will be removed, and children will not be exposed to content that does not benefit them. Online Safety is a statutory requirement of the school curriculum. It is included in the Relationships, Sex, and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum to support children’s learning about staying safe online.

Practitioners need to be aware of the warning signs of a child’s risk of harm online. These may involve changes in behaviour following device use, avoiding family and friends, receiving gifts or money from people they don’t know, and other changes. If you have concerns that a child is at risk of harm online, then this should be dealt with using your organisation’s procedure and reported to your DSL. In addition, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command (CEOP) offers a way to report online child sexual abuse.

Understanding the Child Protection Process in England

The child protection process is the structured way in which concerns potentially involving a child at risk of significant harm are reviewed and addressed. It requires the involvement of several agencies, led by children’s social care. It is helpful for practitioners to understand this process to ensure that children are protected and supported in a timely and coordinated manner, and to help them feel confident in their role.

These usually start with a referral to children’s services. This can be provided by a qualified individual, such as a teacher, health visitor, or police officer, or by a member of the public. A children’s service must make its decision within one working day of receipt of a referral, whether or not the referral meets the threshold for a formal assessment. If the threshold is met, a social worker will conduct an initial assessment, gathering information from the child, family, and other professionals.

A Section 47 investigation will be carried out if a child’s assessment indicates they may be at risk of significant harm. This is a proper, formal enquiry under Section 47 of the Children Act 1989. This also represents co-operation between the police and children’s social care to collect information and assess whether the child requires protection. If it becomes clear the child is at risk, then a Child Protection Conference will be held to discuss the information and determine whether a Child Protection Plan is needed.

A Child Protection Plan outlines what needs to occur to ensure the child is safe and the family is supported. It enumerates the actions to be taken, who will take them, and how they will be measured. The plan is regularly reviewed (usually every 3-6 months), and children are discharged from the plan once the risk is deemed low enough. Children’s voices should be at the heart of this process. They should be listened to and their opinions, wishes and feelings considered in all decisions regarding their welfare.

Early Help and Supporting Families Before Crisis Point

The provision of early help is one of the most precious weapons in the safeguarding armoury. Early help is about providing families who are struggling with help and support before they reach the point where a child may be at risk of significant harm. Early help can have a major impact on outcomes for children and families and is effective at helping to avoid statutory child protection involvement.

A variety of services, such as family support workers, school counsellors, speech and language therapists, health visitors and community organisations, help. It aims to help families facing challenges due to parents’ mental health, domestic violence, substance abuse, financial insecurity or housing instability. None of these factors is necessarily an indicator of child abuse. Still, it may be a vulnerability factor and compound the difficulties parents and carers face in providing for their children’s needs.

The Common Assessment Framework (CAF) and its similar forms used in various local authority areas are frameworks for professionals to use to assess a child and family’s needs and organise early intervention. A professional is designated to ensure that the help provided is coordinated and that the family is not overwhelmed by the agencies involved. The early help approach is strengths-based and family-centred – it assumes that most families will want the best for their children and that, with appropriate help, most families can provide safe and nurturing care.

Early help is not just about families in crisis. It also has universal services, such as Sure Start children’s centres, school-based mental health support, and parenting programmes. These services help increase the resilience of communities and help children develop the skills and confidence to flourish. Early help is a cost-effective and right approach for children and families. Evidence is clear that early interventions not only reduce the demand for statutory services later on but also yield better outcomes for children.

FAQ

1. What Does Safeguarding Children Mean in Simple Terms?

Children are safeguarded by ensuring that they are protected from abuse, neglect, harm and that their health, wellbeing and development are promoted. It means establishing safe environments, early identification of risk factors, and taking steps to keep children safe. It is supported in the UK by the Children Acts of 1989 and 2004 and is the responsibility of everyone from Doctors to teachers, sports coaches to charity volunteers.

2. What is the Difference Between Safeguarding and Child Protection?

Safeguarding is the general term for the care measures and systems needed to look after and protect children’s welfare and minimise harm. Minimising the risk is one aspect of safeguarding, which focuses on taking steps to protect a child who is at risk of significant harm or has suffered it. To put it simply: all child protection is safeguarding,g but not all safeguarding is child protection.

3. Who Has a Legal Duty to Safeguard Children in the UK?

Every local authority, NHS body, school, and the police have a statutory responsibility to ensure that children are safe and that their welfare is promoted under the Children Act 2004. The guidance Working Together to Safeguard Children emphasises that safeguarding is a responsibility of everyone. It is important that every adult who works with or has contact with children is familiar with safeguarding principles and the actions to take if they are concerned.

4. What Are the Most Common Signs That a Child May Need Safeguarding?

There are several indicators that a child may require safeguarding: unexplained injuries, major changes in behaviour or mood, withdrawal from friends and activities, hygiene issues or the wearing of inappropriate clothes, fear of a certain adult or inappropriate sexual knowledge or behaviour. Any individual sign might not appear severe. However, any concern or disclosure from a child should always be taken seriously and reported to your Designated Safeguarding Lead.

5. How Often Should Safeguarding Training Be Refreshed?

Safeguarding training needs to be updated regularly. The majority of statutory guidance suggests that basic safeguarding training should be revised at least once every two years and updated annually to ensure that practitioners become aware of any changes to legislation, guidance and local procedures, with designated Safeguarding Leads receiving more regular training and supervision. The main thing is to keep training up to date and relevant to practice, and not to use it as a one-off tick-box exercise.

Conclusion

What does safeguarding children mean? It is about ensuring that all children are safe, healthy, and free from harm. Putting children’s welfare at the heart of professional practice means creating systems, cultures, and relationships that prioritise children. It involves being familiar with the law, understanding the signs of abuse, and having the confidence to report the abuse when something is not right.

It is not only social workers or specialist agencies who have a role to play in the UK in protecting children. It is everyone’s responsibility, teachers, nurses, coaches, youth workers, volunteers and community members. Any adult who involves themselves in a child’s life is influenced to make a difference. One compliment, one observation or one referral can make a difference in a child’s life.

When working with children, it can be an essential investment to improve your safeguarding knowledge by opting for quality training. Safeguarding Children training will provide practitioners with the skills, knowledge and confidence to carry out their safeguarding responsibilities effectively. Whether you’re new to caring for children or want to brush up on your skills, the appropriate training will help you become a more effective protector of the children in your care, a stronger worker and a more confident safeguarding practitioner.
